A few months ago, a friend asked me to make a t-shirt quilt for his daughter, Abby. Abby has Rett Syndrome. You can read more about Rett Syndrome here. Each year, Abby's family participated in the Run for Rett, a fundraiser for research about Rett Syndrome. The t-shirts were from the various runs.
I purchased some background fabric and dove into my stash for some colourful fabrics to add to the quilt and started sewing. It was fun to figure out what to do next as I went along.
On Sunday, my husband and I delivered Abby's completed quilt to her and her family.
They all loved it!!!! We wrapped the quilt around Abby and I sat beside her for pictures. She was tired and snuggled right into her quilt and almost fell asleep in my lap!
When Abby went to bed that night, she slept under her quilt. It is quilted with an angel pantograph. Three of the t-shirts say "I helped silent angels." Girls with Rett Syndrome cannot talk. Abby has a very nifty computer that tracks her eye gaze and talks for her. At supper, she asked about our names and birthdays and told a few groaner jokes! She also read "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" to us.
I just know that Abby will have pleasant dreams while sleeping under her quilt!
Wow - it turned out great! I am sure she will treasure it.

ReplyDeleteIt looks fantastic - you did a super job of bringing all the teeshirts together. And such a wonderful, heart-warming reason to make it.

ReplyDeleteYou made me smile, even though it is so sad. Thanks very, very much.
I bet Abby loves this Quilt that embodies so much love.
What a honour to be asked to make such a special quilt for Abby. You did a great job!
ReplyDeleteGreat design for a t shirt quilt. I love all the pieced elements you added.
ReplyDeleteHow perfect to bump into you this week from Crazy Mom Quilts. I have just finished the top of my first t-shirt quilt! It started out as kind of a "never say never" project for a friend but I ended up really enjoying putting it all together. I added a few extras, too, but not as well as you did. I'm going to PIN your photo for next time it that's okay? Did you run into any problems quilting it? What a lovely gift. Abby looks so cozy on your lap!
ReplyDeleteThat is beautiful, and what a great friend you are to make it. I love the extra blocks you added amongst the t-shirts.
ReplyDeleteI remember when you started on this...how lovely it is all finished and what a wonderful gift for a sweet girl! :)
