Back to the Sewing Machine

I spent some quality time with my sewing machine this week.  The Elgin Piecemakers Guild makes comfort quilts for adult chemo patients at our local hospital so each month, we each have to make a block in a certain colour scheme.  I have my first four blocks for 2023 made.  Here they are:

January:  Blue and white.

February: Red, white and blue

March:  Purple, pink and white

April: Blue and purple churn dash.

I worked on the last three houses for my Coming Home Quilt.  I did not have any light turquoise thread with me at the sewing day this week so I will do the door and window on the magenta house next week.

I finished my MIL's wall hanging on our way to visit her last week.  She loves it and wanted to hang it up right away!

I finally got around to working on a blue block for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge this month.  I have two panels of printed pineapple blocks for foundation piecing and decided to use one of them for the RSC each month.  The gray background fabric is a relatively new addition to my stash.  It should look good with all the colours each month.  I have two more ideas in mind for the RSC for a total of three projects this year.  I hope to get my drunkard's path project from last year put together next week.  I already know how I want to quilt it!

Finn just loves this Statue of Liberty ball and was running up and down the hall at my daughter's apartment with it this week.

Beautiful sunset when we were on our way home one evening this week.

I will link up with the RSC folks on Saturday morning and the slow Sunday stitchers on Sunday morning.

  1. Great blocks for your guild donation quilts, Gail. I like the churn dash one, so cool! The pineapple blocks are great for a RSC project, great start. The heart wall hanger is lovely I'm not surprised your MIL liked it and wow, I love that sunset photo...gorgeous!

  2. The Pineapple blocks with the grey backgrounds are going to be a lovely collection.

  3. You are ahead of the game with your charity blocks this year. Do you choose the style of block to make provided it’s in the right colours? Your MiLs wall hanging turned out well. Great colour binding on it. So glad finn is back in good shape again! Sarah. Quilting by the sea

    1. We can make whatever 12.5 inch block we want as long as it is in the prescribed colours

  4. It's always fun to see what you've been working on, Gail! Those charity blocks are great - I bet your guild makes some amazing quilts from them. Love the pineapple block, too - that's a great background fabric. That Finn is so photogenic!

  5. The heart wall hanging is lovely with the stripe binding. I really like the way the gray works to make the color pop in the pineapple block, great choice!

  6. What a great guild to publish the color of the month ahead for high achievers like yourself. The pineapple block is a great one to use up scraps.

  7. Such a great idea for your guild members to make chemo quilts fir patients. Do you have a set pattern to do each month, as well as the suggested colour scheme? Finn does look happy with his new toy.

  8. Love the blue & purple wonky churn dash. The colors are pretty but the style is really cool! Oh that Finn! What a little crowd-pleaser!

  9. I really enjoyed stopping into your blog... I bet your MIL loved the quilted heart wall hanging... how nice... all your blocks and your houses look great too! I do love your pineapple colors...Kathi

  10. You did spend quality time with your sewing machine this week. All those blocks are great. I especially love the RSC block. The grey fabric is going to look fabulous with all the RSC colours throughout the year. Of course your MIL wanted her red and heart wall hanging on the wall is lovely.

  11. I really like the variety of blocks that you have made. I have always loved pineapple blocks. The heart wall hanging is beautiful. So glad you MIL liked it so much.

  12. So glad to see Finn playing with toys!
Wonderful blocks for the comfort quilts!
    Enjoy your hand stitching today!

  13. Great blocks! I love the pineapple and house ones. Happy stitching!

  14. Oh gosh what a variety of lovely projects! I might have to try that style of Churn Dash. It looks like fun as do your houses. But I don't do much applique so I'll just enjoy yours.

  15. How wonderful that you all make quilts for patients in hospitals. You never know who you’ll bless. Once when taking my dad for test we saw a frail, elderly gentleman leaving – all alone and so vulnerable. You are doing an important work.
    Cute Coming Home blocks!
What a precious gift for your mother-in-law!
Your RSC block is so pretty – and wow! What skill! Amazing!
Finn is just the cutest – look at that personality!

  16. What a great group of blocks for your RSC.
The houses are so charming with all their little details. Very Sweet!
The pineapple block is awesome. Fun group of blue prints.
    Finn is so so cute~
