Houston, We Have a Problem...

This past week, as I stitched, I noticed that I was running short on one of the threads for my Frank Lloyd Wright Fountain Glass cross stitch picture.  I made a mental note to pick up more thread #318 the next time I was near the craft store.  Friday night, I ran into the store to pick up the thread and noticed that DMC thread #318 in the store was a much lighter shade of grey than the thread that I had been using for my picture.  I went back out to the car to grab my project box---I had been doing some slow stitching in the car---I searched through all of the DMC threads on display and much to my dismay, there was no thread to match available.  YIKES!  I already have a lot of this colour in my picture and don't really want to take it out.  You may remember that I had to do some unsewing on this picture once already...

This is where I beg and plead for all of you to check your thread stashes to see if you have a darker shade of thread #318 that might match my thread which was likely purchased over 20 years ago.  It seems that the colour of #318 has been changed to a lighter shade of grey!  I am really hoping that I won't have to take out all of the grey stitches that I have done so far...  Here is how the picture looked last week:

And this is how it looks now (sorry about the bad lighting!):

On another note, I started a new quilt this week--this is a gift for a new baby in the family.  I started out with a charm pack and some solid fabrics.  The charm pack has been in my stash for a while...

First, I made a pink star and added a green border:

Then, I took the remaining 5" charm squares and cut them into 2.5" squares.

I sewed the squares to long strips of white fabric...

And pressed them...

I used all of the two patches to make 66 scrappy 4 patches,

Which I added to the star:

Come back next week to see what I have decided to do next.

My husband's grandmother's peonies are blooming this week.  I always look forward to seeing these large white flowers with just a hint of pink in the centres.

I will be linking up with Kathy and the other slow Sunday stitchers in the morning.  If anyone can help me out with the thread, I would be happy to pay for the thread and the postage...

Thanks very much!

  1. Have you compared DMC 317. It seems to be closer to your shade of grey. I do like that baby quilt. What a great way to use the charm pack.

    1. DMC 317 is darker than the thread I have been using. I’m wondering now if I mislabelled the colour years ago....

  2. My 318 is also a light grey, and I know it is at least 20 years old also.

  3. Oh my!! This is a problem, along the years the shade of colors aren't the same. And if you finished an area and begin the next with the new 318. Good lucky! The baby quilt is cute. Happy stitching!

  4. Love the peony and such a darling little quilt. I'll check my embroidery threads.. they are very old.... will see if I have anything near that color. Maybe bring the stitchery into the sore and match against the available colors?

  5. I need to find my DMC threads. They are old, so fingers crossed I might have what you need. I put them away long ago and can't remember right off where. But, am making a posty note here on my desk to remind me to look. I love the look of your project. Peony's are pretty, but I always hated the ants that they attract. Had some close to the house when we moved in and had to dig them up, as there were always ants on the side of the house trying to get in. The quilt square is sooooo pretty. This is my first week doing Slow Sunday Stitch. Enjoying making my rounds among the blogs.

  6. I have some #318 that is at least 10 years old. It is hard to tell if it is the same as the one you have, but you are welcome to check it out if you are in London.

  8. Oh no! I will check my floss when I get a minute and see if I have #318.

  9. My 318 is also a lighter grey and it's about 20 years old. Maybe it depends on where you purchased it. Mine was more than likely purchased in the States. Just a thought.

  10. Such a pretty stack of 2.5" squares! I have DMC 318, and trust me, it's the older one. May I pop it in the mail to you?

  11. Do you always use DMC thread, you might find a better match with anchor thread? I did check my conversion chart to see what colour 318 is in anchor and it's a red, so that's no help to you! And my chart calls it 'lt steel gray' what a blow. I hope you work it out ok.

  12. I sure hope you are able to find the correct color of floss - removing and replacing all those carefully placed stitches seems like a monumental task. I have a DMC floss #318 which I am happy to send to you. I don’t know it’s age, but the color appears to be on the darkish side. Just let me know if you’d like me to pop it into the mail. Best of luck!

  13. I love the little quilt! And peonies and roses are my favorite flowers! I will look for my floss and if I can find it (hidden somewhere in the deep abyss called my closet!) I will let you know if I have that color!
