Blue Ridge Beauty Options...

I have been playing around with my Blue Ridge Beauty blocks on my design floor this morning. I took some pictures to show you the options I have come up with...

This first one is the same as Bonnie Hunter's version--a traditional "Barn Raising" pattern.

This one has dark and light diamonds (I am not using all my blocks in these samples as my design floor has limited space unless I start moving furniture around!)

Here are some larger diamonds:

How about these zig-zags?

A different view of the zig-zags--these look more like giant "W's":

And, last but not least, up arrows...
Obviously, there are many more possibilities, but these are the ones I am considering at the moment.

Please let me know which one (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6) is your favourite by commenting on this blog post. I am open to suggestions...

  1. I like #2 but I guess it all depends on which design is different from what you've done recently. At least I like to keep doing different things. The colors are lovely and actually all the designs are nice and unique but I'd choose #2 since you're making me choose :)

  2. I like them all but #3 is my favorite right now. Tomorrow might look different :-)

  4. Hi, Gail,
It's hard to pick, I've always liked #1, but I did smile at your "larger diamonds" setting, #3, it shows good definition. Have fun!

  5. I like the #3 the best. It's a little different then the traditional #1.

  6. They all are BEAUTIFUL! I prefer the traditional #1, and also the vertical zigzag #4. Fun to see this today. I just bought a couple of blue FQs to cut up for one of these as well. :-)

  7. I love them all which is not helpful. I think I would go for 3 or 6.

  8. #1 or #3 - I'm square and like the closed patterns :-). Lovely shades of blue too.

  10. I had never thought of different ways to lay it out. I'm making one also. Now I have to consider different layouts. I do like #1 and #3. Thanks for asking my opinion.

  13. I'm like #3 first and then #1 :-). #3 gives a neat variation with the lights and darks. They're looking great.

  14. I did a variation of barn raising when I made mine, but I think I'd go with layout #2 if I were making another one.

  16. #3 is my favorite. #1 is my second choice. Whatever you do is going to be really nice. :)

  17. I like the second and third. Make it your own, not one that we've seen before, even though they are all lovely, YOU have great setting ideas also.

Some settings are already dictated by your pressing results, aren't they?

  20. I guess I'm too much a traditionalist, but I think #1 gives the best over all look, not divided up like blocks and zig zags are just not my thing. I think it is hard to decide from pictures so go with the one you like best, after all it is your quilt! Just my humble opinion.

  22. I'm working on Blue Ridge Beauty too. I'm determined to make mine king size...I think I'll be piecing these blocks forever! I'm halfway there. My favorite layouts are #1 and #5. Hmmm. Wonder what it would look like to combine two of them? Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

  23. Hi Gail,

My vote is for #3 - the larger diamonds. I just love blue & white quilts. Can't wait to see this one at guild. Well done!

  25. I liked #6 - the up arrows. I really liked all of them, but I would probably use #6.

  26. You forgot one ;-). How about just straight lines from the left down corner until the upper right corner... I am making mine in browns and having the same choosing/deciding issues, but I think that is the one I would go for at the moment!

  27. I like the larger diamonds & 'W' designs...my eye loves balance in design & must say I love your colour choice! Well balanced there too! A very nice blue/neutral controlled scrappy. Living up to your name...a cozy quilt!

  29. I vote for # 3. The zigzag makes me crosseyed, and the all up arrows look like it's ready for takeoff! It will look great anyway you decide.

  30. I like #1 Barn Raising and #3 the larger diamond pattern. After I wrote this I scrolled through other comments to realize it is a popular opinion!
