Flannel Vortex Baby Quilt DONE!

Over the past few months, I have been using some of my many bright flannel scraps to make a flannel vortex baby quilt.  This is my third vortex quilt...I did my first one as part of a quilt-along with Amanda Jean at Crazy Mom Quilts.  The second one was made with my darker flannel scraps and was given to a friend who was going through cancer treatments.  A friend's daughter is having a baby soon so this quilt will be a gift for the new baby.

I used my walking foot and my favourite serpentine stitch to quilt this one. I wanted to make sure that there was quilting through every piece of fabric for stability when it is washed.  I make my baby quilts to be used and washed over and over again!

Some of these scraps have been hanging out in my sewing room for a long time.  Most are leftovers from PJ's I have made for my daughter and my twin nieces.  Does a scrap of flannel from 23 years ago count as vintage???

The quilt was just a bit too wide to use one width of fabric piece for the back so I pieced a strip of little birds into the middle of the dotty fabric to make the backing wide enough.  The binding used up almost all of the dotty fabric --there may be a few scraps of dotty fabric to add to my next flannel vortex quilt.

Happy Canada Day!  Happy 150th Birthday, Canada!

  1. Hi Gail...Just want to say thanks for the novelty prints you sent me for my wee houses, they arrived yesterday. We've planned an impromptu trip to Cuba, so I'm going to get pieces ready for my houses and that will be my go-to project on the trip! Sandra

  2. neat quilt and like the quilting - know what you mean about old fabric - my grandson just turned 17 I am still using some scraps leftover from his baby quilt given to him as a newborn - some is in the quilt I am making right now!!

  3. That is a good question. How old must a scrap be to become vintage? It's a fun project and finish. Happy Canada Day to my neighbors to the north. --Andrea

  5. I started a scrap vortex baby flannel quilt this spring. I don't have enough for baby quilt size yet, but it's a start. Thanks for reminding me, it is still in the UFO pile!!

  6. This looks awesome! I don't have a lot of flannel, but I probably have enough left over from backings to make something like this! Thanks for sharing!

  7. Hi Gail,
I have never heard of the term vortex quilt before - not sure what that means - but this sure is a cute quilt!! I just absolutely love, love, LOVE the quilting. One of my new favorite stitches myself (I used it to imply waves on a Finding Nemo quilt). This will be well loved for sure. ~smile~ Roseanne

  14. Thanks for sharing your flannel vortex quilt. I was just gifted a bunch of children's flannel scraps which would work perfectly this way. Your blog entry was very timely for me.
